I lived with a family in northern Germany 1987-88. I have been back only once, after reunification, when I was working in the east. I don't talk to my host family near enough, but I think about that time a lot, and it has shaped who I am today. I enjoy meeting people who were exchange students years ago, and hearing of their experiences.

Re: Where were you when?
Mon, August 16, 2004 - 6:02 PMI was in Southern Germany (Esslingen which is south of Stuttgart) in 1990-91. I went with YFU and was funded through the Congress Bundestag program. It was the best year of my life.
I also enjoy meeting people who were exchange students and I alway try to encourage young people to study abroad (for a YEAR)!
I hope to promote cultural exchange with homestays more. I am working on helping some Chinese students come to the US now. It really isn't easy to get visas to go to the US, esp. since 9/11 and especailly from a "developing" country . . . Lots of headaches.
Anyways, I am VERY enthusiastic about teenage cultural exchange!

Re: Where were you when?
Thu, August 25, 2005 - 8:47 AMI was in Cáceres (western-most province- Extremadura) in Spain 2002-2003. Also, best time of my life. Study abroad was actually the reason I chose the college I did. They have a great SA program, and tons of options. A good friend of mine studied in Thailand, another in Nepal, China, Japan, Kenya, Greece, Ecuador... Sometimes I wish I had gone to Latin America, but Spain definitely has a place in my heart unparalleled to anywhere else.
Oh, And my brother studied abroad in Stuttgart in 87-88. Small world!
